The Lost Armadillo

The little girl only wanted one thing, but it was nowhere to be found. Read about Barb’s grand search for the lost armadillo.

I got this note from my employee, Barb, a few weeks ago. Her story is so charming that I decided I just have to share it:

Our job title is “Play Expert.” Today I finally learned what that means.
A young customer, maybe about eight or nine years old, came up to the counter and asked if we had any armadillos. I had seen the stuffed armadillo on the toddler table the night before, but when I cleaned up that night it wasn’t there.
The customer then told me that she had “hidden” it under the shelves, where she was sure she had put it, but it wasn’t there.
I looked on the computer, and it was the last one in stock. She looked so sad. So I did a spot check, walking around the store looking high and low to see if it had somehow gotten back onto a wayward shelf, but to no avail.
I wasn’t going to give up. The look on the little girl’s face wouldn’t let me. So I got down on my hands and knees, and crawled around all the shelves in the train section, then proceeded, still crawling, mind you, toward the music section.  Ah ha! There was the lonely armadillo, under the music shelf, waiting for the customer to retrieve it.
I called out to her that I had found it! Her smile could have lit up an entire city. She thrust a plastic bag full of coins into my hand and hugged that armadillo with all her might.
We walked up to the counter and she counted out her quarters, dimes and pennies, all thirteen dollars worth.  She even got a penny change.
I did tell her about our “hold policy” so that next time, and I am sure there will be a next time, she won’t have to “hide” her treasure find.
