Hoot
Roy Eberheart is the new kid at school. Again. But when he’s pressed up against the window of his school bus (by a bully) and notices a boy sprinting by with no shoes, his move to Florida becomes much more interesting. Roy’s curiosity takes him on a mystery-solving adventure that will make you laugh and think, all told in grand hilarious style reminiscent of Mark Twain. Fighting for the environment has never been this funny.
Carl Hiaasen won the Newberry Honor award in 2003 for Hoot, in addition to a number of other prominent awards. Hiaasen is most famous for his strange mystery satires for grown-ups, but Hoot, his first young adult novel, is a rousing success.
With its quirky style, bizarre turns, and antidevelopment/pro-environment message, Hoot is a book well worth reading for any middle schooler or older who likes adventure, strange twists, and sticking up for what’s right.
