The Phantom Tollbooth
Bored Milo finds himself in a funk. He’s not very excited about school or much of anything else.
When the Phantom Tollbooth appears in his room, he drives his electric toy car through it, and has – aided by the helpful Tock, the watch dog – explorations and adventures through a universe where Rhyme and Reason are rescued, one jumps to the Island of Conclusions, sails the Sea of Knowledge, goes past the land of Expectations, and escapes the Doldrums.
Mathematical, literary, and philosophical concepts spring to life as characters and situations; kids will find a new way to look at their value and meaning – while lucky adults reading to them will laugh out loud at the clever, insightful story’s twists and turns.
Now in it’s 20th Anniversary edition, this classic by Norton Juster accented beautifully with illustrations by cartoonist Jules Feiffer – also has an introductory appreciation by Maurice Sendak.
