Humphrey is a likeable little hamster who loves being Room 26’s classroom pet.  He loves the students and the teacher, Ms. Mac, but when Ms. Mac unexpectedly leaves and is replaced by Mrs. Brisbane, who despises little furry pets, things get more difficult. Humphrey does enjoy going home with various students for weekends, however, and he gets to see a lot of life situations.  He comes up with plans for problems, and helps carry them out in delightful and creative ways.  Humphrey’s narrative makes for entertaining reading and shows that “you can learn a lot about yourself by getting to know another species.”
